Ebenezer Baptist Church

est.1917

The first Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church (that we can confirm) was the late Pastor E. Smith, who served for a very short time, likely during the period 1917 through the early 1920s. Later, elders recall the late Pastor Renner, who likely served during the early 1930s.The progress was slow, but the old patriots demonstrated their true faith in God by keeping Ebenezer’s doors open for worship. The next was the late Pastor Simpson, who likely served from the mid 1930s through a period that is not confirmed. However, later the late Pastor Liza Scott likely served as Pastor from late 1930s until the late 1950s. Under Pastor Scott’s leadership, electricity was installed, and the wood stove was replaced by an oil burner.

It is likely that during this period, one of the most significant events in Ebenezer’s history was recorded. As Joppa was annexed into Harford County from Baltimore County, land records were established, and on November 8, 1935, Estella and John Ennis officially donated the land identified on the present deed of Ebenezer Baptist Church unto Trustees William H. Demby, Theodore Peters, George Tolliver (the father of Mother Doretha Higgins and the late Mother Eva Pleasant), and Isaac Holley. In 1955, the late Pastor Latta Hall was chosen to lead Ebenezer. He labored teaching and preaching, and God gave him the vision to build a new church. In addition, under the leadership of Pastor Hall, three (3) men were called to preach the Gospel, Elder Charles Middleton, Elder Joseph Jones and Elder Melvin Tucker. Pastor Hall served as Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church for 27 years, and with the sacrifice of time, talent and money, on October 18, 1980, his vision came to fruition as the building next door opened for service. Five years later, Pastor Hall gave way to the late Pastor Fred Hall Jr. (no relation), who was elected Pastor in 1986. After serving Ebenezer for a few years, Pastor Fred Hall Jr. stepped down. In 1990, the late Pastor Edward White, Sr., Associate Minister at Shining Star Baptist Church, became the Interim Pastor at Ebenezer.

On May 11, 1992, the late Pastor Edward White Sr. was chosen to lead the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Under his leadership: the membership grew, six (6) men were called to preach and teach- Elder Nazireth Lyons, Elder Jerry Parker, Elder Clifford Lonesome, Elder Rickie Johnson, Elder Curtis Epps, and Minister Kirk Knockett; nine (9) Deacons were ordained: Deacon Jerry Parker, Deacon Duward Grice, Deacon James Greene, Deacon Trevor Marsh, Deacon Terry Thomas, Deacon Lyndell Capitol, Deacon Alonzo Lee, Deacon Michael Benham, and Deacon Kirk Knockett. Under Pastor White’s leadership, Ebenezer obtained Tax Exempt Incorporation Status in 1991, the parking lot was resurfaced, a church van was purchased, a new sound system was installed, the choir lofts were extended, new lights were installed, the front porch was built, a new roadside sign and a new steeple were installed. Through faithfulness in the Lord, Pastor White’s prayers and vision for a new building became a reality and we hosted the Groundbreaking Ceremony Service for the new sanctuary on August 25, 2013. With praise and glory to God, on February 24, 2014, EBC held a pilgrimage from the old Sanctuary for the first service to be held in the new church. On September 14, 2014, Pastor White relinquished his role as Senior Pastor giving way to Elder Jerry L. Parker, establishing him as the new Senior Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The Installation Service for Pastor Jerry L. Parker was held on October 31, 2014 with his first sermon provided to the congregation on November 2, 2014. Under his leadership, the membership has tripled; one Minister was ordained and elevated to the office of Assistant Pastor: Elder Kirk Knockett; five were called to the Ministry: Minister Eyvonne H. Capitol, Minister Kwame L. Parker (his youngest son), Minister Michael T. Benham, Minister James C. Greene, and Minister Alonzo M. Lee, Sr; four Deacons were ordained: Deacon Eric Eure, Deacon Darryl Halsey, Deacon Easton Nicholson, and Deacon Anthony Chandler. Also under Pastor Parker’s leadership: new construction for the Pastor’s Study and Trustees Office was completed; the former church building was officially converted into an Education Facility and Fellowship Hall; Standard Operating Procedures for the church ministries were established; Bible Studies were expanded to include: the Young Adult Sunday School Class, the Perryman Senior Home Bible Study, ELEVATE Biblical Studies & Workshops, and the NEXTGEN Youth & Young Adult Bible Study; 15 ministries were created: ANCHORED Young Adult Ministry, Children’s Church, Empowered Youth Ministry, Faces of Grace Dance Ministry, Intercessory Prayer Ministry, Ladies of Victory Women’s Ministry, Media Ministry, Men and Women’s Prison Ministries, Street Evangelism, Men’s Ministry, Pastoral Care and Support Ministry, Praise and Worship Team, Security Ministry, and Tutoring Classes for the youth of Ebenezer and the local community.

Additionally, the Nursing Home Ministry was expanded in 2016 so that each month a different EBC Ministry leads the Worship Service; four (4) community service projects were completed including: Red Cross donations in 2014, 2017 and 2018 to aid storm victims; a donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 2017; and the Mother Eva Pleasant Scholarship was established in 2017. Led by the Holy Spirit during the pandemic of 2020, Pastor Parker ensured the Word of God continued to go forth through prayer and teaching. The Intercession Prayer Ministry was expanded to daily prayer and Words of Encouragement 5 days a week via teleconference and Sunday morning worship service shifted to online streaming. In March 2021, the Media Media Ministry project was completed which enhanced the audio and visual presence of EBC online. This included the installation of two televisions mounted in the main sanctuary, the installation of a multimedia system inside the Media Office to support online streaming of services and events, as well as the internet network expansion to allow services to be viewable in both the Main Sanctuary and Education Facility.

For their 10th year as Pastor & First Lady, the EBC family commemorated their milestone by hosting a banquet at the Maryland Golf & Country Club in Bel Air, MD on Friday, October 25, 2024 with a host of family and friends. Ater spending time in prayer and hearing from God, Pastor Parker heeded the voice of the Lord and prepared for another transition. On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Pastor Parker announced that would be retiring from the role of Senior Pastor, giving way for Assistant Pastor Kirk L. Knockett to become the next Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. A retirement celebration was held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 in which he and First Lady Mary Parker were honored for their impact, labor, and love.

The Installation Service for Pastor Kirk L. Knockett was held on Sunday, July 20, 2025 with his first sermon provided to the congregation on Sunday, July 27, 2025. â€‹

There have been many wonderfully blessed moments in Ebenezer’s history, and there will likely be many more as we move to honor our spiritual ancestors and continue to grow Ebenezer into the church that God wants it to be. We pray that God will continue to bless the Ebenezer Baptist Church in all of our future endeavors.
